Te Araroa SI Day 02 – All beginnings are hard

Queen Charlotte Track from Camp Bay to Clashed Bay Campsite
Hiking time: 08:30a.m.-05:30p.m.
Daily/Total distance: 24km/51km
Steps: 34016
Weather: cloudy with drizzling rain setting in the afternoon

The night wasn’t going too well for me. I kept waking up pretty much every 30 min. I finally got up at 7:40am. At that point I found 5 big mosquitoes in my tent. I killed them all and found some of my blood in them. This could explain the bad night-.-

I was slow in getting started. As mentioned before, I don’t yet have a routine down about what to do and I’m what order. Other had already left. There were only around 4 people still around. The DOC worker told us about taking enough water as there is none along the trail until the next campground. Then she left us to get going. Had an awesome breakfast of wraps with Nutella and Banana chips. Soo good:)

Finally left at 8:30am. The track first went up for a bit, also going along a road for a stretch. After that it went along the top of the mountain.

Along the top

I made a stop at the Bay of many Coves Campsite to eat something. There I met two Swedish women as well as a kiwi Swiss couple. We got talking and at some point I mentioned my developing blister. The kiwi lady then offered me some wool to wrap around my toes. It is supposed to take up the areas where the toe is pressed. It comes from their own sheep. Such generosity:)

So I applied the wool as they set off. At that point it started drizzling. Such joy to hike in the rain. I also stopped at the next campsite, black rock. I met the same people again. We talked while eating lunch. It got colder as we sat, with wind joining the drizzle. They left before me again while I finished lunch. Afterwards I set off, still wearing my rain jacket and longsleeve due to the cold. I got really warm though from hiking and soon changed back to my top.

After the campsite it was pretty much downhill.

Beautiful track

At the end of the track there was a further 700m to go down before reaching the Clashed Bay campsite. This was really tough but I finally made it at 5:30.

Found a flat spot to set up my tent and then sorted my gear in the cooking shelter. This website is a bit more expensive. It has flushing toilets, same as the last, but also a cold shower. Does not exactly warrant the price difference from 8 to 15$, but I can’t go further anyways.

Late after sundown I talked to a kiwi girl hiking the QCT who gave suggestions about things to see after finishing the TA.

Back in my tent around 10pm I wrapped my feet and sorted my new blisters. Day 2 and I got 2 more blisters. Most annoyingly on my pinky toe, the same place which has previously annoyed me on the Camino.
